Exercise 01

Exercise 01 is an intial study in the abstraction of marine biology and the creation of patterns as a study of biomimicry.






I was interested in Euplectella, commonly known as the Venus Flower Basket. It is actually a marine organism in the deep pacific seas which is composed of glass. It actually creates its fragile glass structure from silica and actually is a strong structure of hexagonal weaving.









From the diagram, I used the components to create variations in the pattern. Pattern 2 is actually a variation of 1, but uses mirroring and scaling of the components to achieve a certain degree of variation and irregularity. Pattern 3 is a combination of 1 and 2, which creates a certain balance of regularity vs. irregularity.
